Local Government - Municipalities
Ohio has more than 1,000 local governments, including municipalities which are cities and villages, townships and counties. Videos for municipal government elected officials, and townships can be found here. For county officials, visit the County Government page.
Ohio's local governments consist of 88 counties, 2,239 cities, towns, and villages, and 904 special districts. Each municipality (cities and villages) chooses its own form of government, but most have elected mayors and city councils or city commissions. Ohio Townships have their own form of government as well, which includes a three-member board of township trustees. Local government also includes schools districts. Ohio has 608 school districts. These districts are governed by an elected board of education.
